Laser

A Several factors may cause the face to get older, prematurely: sun, acne and varicela scars, systemic diseases, tobacco (cigarettes, pipes and cigars), drugs, insufficient sleep, etc.

Laser is a strong allay for facial rejuvenation, associated or not to some special products, to dermabrasion and peeling.

The development of Laser technology doesn’t stop. They are getting more and more harmless and the results are excellent.

At the beginning there was CO2 laser, now in disuse. It used to cause even 2. Grade burns. Yag laser has proved to be the least aggressive one, causing an abrasion or bruise and it is not invasive. It promotes the resurging of a new skin, stimulates the production of collagen (which is essential for the natural shine of the skin).

No treatment lasts forever, the laser treatment may need to be repeated, depending on the problem to be solved. It can be repeated in 30 days intervals.

How is it done, what are its effects?

Laser is a light that promotes the evaporation of the water existing inside the cells. The most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis, is destroyed by the action of laser. It removes the dead cells and stimulates the growth of a new epidermis. On the first 3 days the face stays with a strong reddish color, similar to severe sunburn. The skin eliminates a white-yellowish secretion.

In this period, it is mandatory the use of hydrating creams and we advise you to sprinkle the face, several times a day, with cold saline solution or cold mineral water. On the 6th day crusts begin to form (like the ones that appear on bruises). After the 7th day, those crusts are eliminated and the skin gets very clear. On the 10th day we offer a skin hydration treatment, made in a beauty parlor of our confidence. One month later, the skin gets darker and after 3 months, the process of lightening of the skin begins again.

Now the follow-up by the doctor is indispensable. At this moment, there is need for the use of clarifiers, peeling and dermabrasion.
The time spent is of approximately one hour for the face and one and a half hour when doing the face, associated to the neck.

IT IS FUNDAMENTAL TO AVOID EXPOSURE TO THE SUN DURING THE FIRST 3 MONTHS.

REMEMBER THAT ANY SKIN TREATMENT WON’T SHOW IT’S FINAL RESULT BEFORE A YEAR.

What kind of anesthesia?

Depending on the sensitivity of each patient we can use topic anesthesia with anesthetic ointment and light sedation or local anesthesia with sedation. Most of the cases do not need local anesthesia.

Does it hurt?

I can speak both as a doctor and as a patient because I submitted myself for 3 times to a laser treatment on my own face and neck.

On the first 3 days there is a strong sensation of heat and stiffness of the skin.

The eyes get very swollen. After the 5th day you get the appearance of a chameleon, because the skin is full of patches. After the 10th day the face gets clear and smooth, similar to a baby face, and the discomfort disappears.

What may go wrong?

Each skin has its own pigmentation and own area of distribution of it, differing from person to person.

No doctor may guarantee a good cicatrisation for any patient. Only the medical experience may indicate or contraindicate a treatment.

The success of any treatment depends on a correct indication.

There are some types of skins that won’t get any benefit from laser; actually it can sometimes injure them. The physician must have real experience on this topic. If there is any doubt, it is necessary to make a previous test with this method.

Infection only occurs if the patient does not take the necessary care. This is not an invasive treatment, but only abrasive. If the patient suffers from herpes, he must take a specific medication before the laser.

Laser is not indicated during pregnancy and for users of pacemakers.

In some patients the spots remain longer than expected, 6 months and even a year. In this case, the use of clarifiers and peeling will increase the chances of solving this problem.

Milia (little whitish points) may appear immediately after laser, but with time it will disappear.

When can we resume our activities?

Actually you can return to your activities on the next day, depending on the kind of activity. However we advise you to remain the first week without any contact with the public.

After this period of time, it is very important to use camouflage make-ups, since the skin is very reddish.

Summary

It is important to remind you and make you understand that no plastic treatment will obtain a result 100% satisfactory. It also is not a permanent treatment. Sometimes it is necessary to make more than one procedure to solve certain problems.

Laser is a strong allied to facial rejuvenation, it diminishes the superficial wrinkles but it never eliminates the deep ones. It clarifies the skin, but it is impossible to eliminate all the dark spots with it. Laser does not eliminate any white spot. As with any other treatment, we may obtain excellent results or poor ones.

Laser is also indicated to eliminate superficial spots or moles, hemangioma (blood tumor), psorias, striae, tatooning, microvarix, depilation, xantelasma (micro nodules that usually appear on the eye lids).
